Ants disperse seeds farther in habitat patches with corridors

چکیده

Abstract Habitat fragmentation impacts ecosystems worldwide through habitat loss, reduced connectivity, and edge effects. Yet, these landscape factors are often confounded, leaving much to be investigated about their relative effects, especially on species interactions. In a experiment, we the consequences of connectivity effects for seed dispersal by ants. We found that ants dispersed seeds farther in patches connected corridors, but only patch centers. did not see an effect total number moved or rate detected seeds. Furthermore, any differences ant community composition across types, suggesting shifts behavior other increased corridors. Long‐distance requires accumulation short‐distance events over generations may underappreciated mechanism which corridors increase plant diversity.

Landscape corridors can increase invasion by an exotic species and reduce diversity of native species.

Landscape corridors are commonly used to mitigate negative effects of habitat fragmentation, but concerns persist that they may facilitate the spread of invasive species. In a replicated landscape experiment of open habitat, we measured effects of corridors on the invasive fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, and native ants. Fire ants have two social forms: polygyne, which tend to disperse poorly but...

Do Habitat Corridors Provide Connectivity ? PAUL

Skeptics have questioned the empirical evidence that corridors provide landscape connectivity. Some also have suggested dangers of corridors. We reviewed published studies that empirically addressed whether corridors enhance or diminish the population viability of species in habitat patches connected by corridors. A randomized and replicated experimental design has not been used—and we argue is...

Questioning the implementation of habitat corridors: a case study in interior São Paulo using ants as bioindicators.

In this paper we operated ant collections in three inland Atlantic forest fragments and in the neighboring Edmundo Navarro de Andrade State Forest (FEENA), an Eucalyptus plantation located in Rio Claro, interior of São Paulo State. We show that the ant communities of the native forest fragments are more similar among themselves than to the ant community of FEENA. Thus we evidence that, in addit...

Splash-cup plants accelerate raindrops to disperse seeds.

The conical flowers of splash-cup plants Chrysosplenium and Mazus catch raindrops opportunistically, exploiting the subsequent splash to disperse their seeds. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we elucidate their mechanism for maximizing dispersal distance. We fabricate conical plant mimics using three-dimensional printing, and use high-speed video to visualize splash profiles...

An Experimental Test of Corridor Effects on Butterfly Densities

In a large-scale experiment, we found that three habitat-restricted butterfly species reached higher densities in patches connected by corridors than in similar, isolated patches. We conducted our study in 27 equal-sized (1.64-ha) patches that varied in whether or not they were connected to another patch by a corridor. Patches and corridors were open, early-successional habitat that contrasted ...
